Happy 25th Birthday, Silverheights PS
June 3rd, 2015It has been 25 years since the doors opened at Silverheights Public School, and now, the school has opened their doors to their school community. An overwhelming reunion of students and staff, from past and present, strolled the halls and took time to share stories. The greatest was having Silverheights PS alumni remember what fun they had, and many showing their kids what school was like “back in the day.”
The 25th Anniversary celebration began with a picnic, followed by speeches and a musical trip through the years by staff and students. The group worked very hard on a number of songs and dances that their guests enjoyed. The evening concluded by visiting community partner displays that were spread throughout the school.
A highlight of the evening was the opening and viewing of the time capsule and its contents that was sealed in 1989. Notable items that were include: a New Kids on the Block poster, an Apple OS floppy disk, a pencil with “The Waterloo County Board of Education” name on it and a Where’s Waldo book signed by staff and students. The original time capsule will be resealed and left to be re-opened for the 50th Anniversary, in 2039-2040.
However, Silverheights PS will add a second time capsule to be opened in 2039-2040. All their students had the opportunity to get involved by suggesting many items to put into the new time capsule. The top 10 are: pictures of the staff and students, a picture of the school with the new playground equipment and new addition, 2015 money, 2015 stamps, popular video games, toys and candy, a pencil and paper, and a music CD. Three senior students also created a video interviewing staff and students about Silverheights PS that will be included.
The anniversary event was a wonderful community event with a fantastic turn out – Happy Birthday, Silverheights PS!
